In addition to providing psychotherapy to families, couples and individuals, I also coach professionals who have goals in the areas of Emotional Intelligence or interpersonal skills. |
DEFINITION OF COACHING
Coaching is an interactive process, a clearly-defined mentoring relationship which helps individuals—or organizations—establish and move towards specific goals.
Coaching aids in the development or mastery of needed competencies in areas such as leadership, communication and effective personnel management.
It is a strategic investment in your personal and professional growth.
Coaching is not therapy. When your main need, or the need of the employee for whom you seek help, is to work through situations from the past or to process difficult emotional experiences, therapy might be a more appropriate solution.
CHARACTERISTICS OF COACHING
• The first task of coaching is to help you develop individualized plans and goals—and an effective goal may be defined as “a dream with a deadline”
A “SMART” goal must be SPECIFIC
MEASUREABLE
APPROPRIATED (OWNED PERSONALLY)
REALISTIC
TIME-BOUND
Also, a goal should be
INSPIRING
ENGAGING
• Depending on your needs and availability we may interact once or twice a week for sessions of 15 minutes to an hour . . . or once every two weeks for a two-hour session
• We may “meet” by telephone, if this is more convenient for you
• It would also be possible for me, in many situations, to come meet with you in your office or workplace
• Coaching generally includes an element of accountability; once we identify your goals, I will help you set specific deadlines and accompany you as you make progress towards your goals within these deadlines
POTENTIAL BENEFITS OF COACHING
• The content of coaching sessions may include the following, as needed or required by you or by the employee for whom you are seeking a coach:
đ Evaluating and increasing Emotional Intelligence (made up of those “soft skills” which may be more directly linked to success than are “hard” technical skills)
đ Increasing self-awareness and self-understanding
đ Identifying and modifying those attitudes, beliefs or behaviours which might be obstacles to advancement
đ Managing stress
đ Managing anger
đ Developing better communication skills and greater empathy
đ Working on conflict resolution skills
đ Gaining an understanding of how to work more effectively with different personality types
đ Improving relationships with superiors, partners, employees and clients or customers
đ Achieving a better work-life balance
đ Exploring appropriate career choices or possible career moves
đ Developing a personal vision or mission statement, and clarifying values, needs and desires
